Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savanna park, covers 370 square kilometers in the western region near Mbarara. Despite its size, it offers a unique safari experience with rolling hills, open savannas, wetlands, and the park’s centerpiece, Lake Mburo. It is the only national park in Uganda where zebras are commonly found, alongside impalas, elands, and topis. The park is also home to buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, leopards, and over 350 bird species, including the rare African finfoot. Unlike many other Ugandan parks, Lake Mburo prohibits elephants, making it ideal for walking safaris and horseback riding, allowing visitors to enjoy wildlife up close. Boat cruises on Lake Mburo provide opportunities to spot hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds in their natural habitat. The park also connects with local communities, where cultural tours highlight the traditions of the Banyankole people, famous for their long-horned Ankole cattle. Its accessibility from Kampala makes it a perfect stopover between the capital and southwestern Uganda’s gorilla parks. Though small, Lake Mburo’s diversity of activities—game drives, walking safaris, horseback riding, and boat trips—ensures a memorable and distinct wildlife adventure.
